📖 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” [NIV]
THE CONTEXT: PAUL’S CHARGE TO TIMOTHY
2 Timothy 4:1-2 is the setup: “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season...” Paul is writing from a Roman prison, near death [2 Timothy 4:6-7]. He knows false teaching will explode after he’s gone [Acts 20:29-30]. So he tells Timothy: “Hold the line on sound doctrine.”
VERSE-BY-VERSE EXPOSITION
A. “...when people will not tolerate sound teaching.” Sound doctrine confronts sin [2 Timothy 3:16], calls for repentance [Acts 2:38], and exalts CHRIST alone [1 Corinthians 2:2]. Flesh hates that. Parallel: “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching” [ESV]. Isaiah saw it too: “...speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions” [Isaiah 30:10].
B. “...following their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves...”
Doctrine is chosen by preference, not truth. People don’t ask “Is this biblical?” They ask “Does this feel good? Does this let me live how I want?” [2 Peter 3:3].
Result: You build an echo chamber. “Woe to the rebellious children... who carry out a plan, but not of mine” [Isaiah 30:1].
C. “...because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.” Like an itch you can’t scratch. Always chasing the next revelation, prophecy, trend, “fresh word,” but never obeying the last one. Bible Pattern: Athens [Acts 17:21] “spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.” Curiosity without conviction = instability [Ephesians 4:14]. Warning: “Always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth” [2 Timothy 3:7].
D. “...They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” Today: prosperity without holiness, grace without repentance, self-help instead of cross-bearing. Outcome: “...they exchanged the truth of GOD for a lie” [Romans 1:25].

WHY THIS HAPPENS: THE ROOT
1. A hardened heart – “They are darkened in their understanding” [Ephesians 4:18]. 2. Love of comfort over conviction – “Wide is the gate and broad is the way” [Matthew 7:13]. 3. No love for truth – “...they refused to love the truth and so be saved” [2 Thessalonians 2:10].
PAUL’S ANTIDOTE IN THE SAME CHAPTER Paul doesn’t just warn — he gives the solution in 2 Timothy 4:2, 5: 1. Preach the Word – “In season and out of season.” No editing for comfort. 2. Be sober-minded – “But you, keep your head in all situations” [v.5]. Don’t chase hype. 3. Fulfill your ministry – Stay faithful, not popular. “I have finished the race” [v.7].
JESUS’ words: “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice” [John 18:37]. Sheep know the Shepherd’s voice [John 10:27].
BOTTOM LINE APPLICATION
For us today: 1. Test every teacher by Scripture – Bereans “examined the Scriptures daily” [Acts 17:11]. 2. Love truth more than trend – “Buy truth, and do not sell it” [Proverbs 23:23]. 3. Receive correction – “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” [Proverbs 27:6]. 4. Stay with the Word – “Your Word is a lamp to my feet” [Psalm 119:105], not the latest viral sermon clip.
“Continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of” [2 Timothy 3:14].
