THE TRIPARTITE NATURE OF MAN
God designed you as one whole person, but He speaks to each part distinctly so nothing in you is left unattended. Let’s dive into BODY, SOUL & SPIRIT with more Scripture, purpose, and how to apply it.
THE FOUNDATION: GOD’S DESIGN
Genesis 2:7 — “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
1. Dust = BODY
2. Breath of God = SPIRIT
3. Living creature/Nephesh = SOUL
You are not a spirit trapped in a body. You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. All 3 matter to God.
1. BODY — THE TEMPLE & INSTRUMENT
Purpose: To express God in the physical world and to serve others.
Deeper truths:
– Bought and Owned
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 — “You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Your health, rest, food, work ethic are acts of worship.
– Weak but Useful
2 Corinthians 4:7 — “We have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.”
God uses your tired hands, your voice, your presence.
– Will Be Redeemed
Romans 8:11 — “He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
Philippians 3:21 — “He will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body.”
God isn’t throwing your body away. He’s redeeming it.
Practical checks for your BODY:
Am I sleeping, eating, and resting to honor God? Mark 6:31
Is my body serving others or just myself? Galatians 5:13
Am I fleeing sin that defiles the temple? 1 Corinthians 6:18
2. SOUL — THE BATTLEGROUND & DECISION CENTER
The soul is the bridge between spirit and body. It’s where choices are made.
A. MIND — The Control Room
Proverbs 23:7 — “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”
– Renewed: Ephesians 4:23 — “Be renewed in the spirit of your minds”
– Guarded: Philippians 4:8 — “Whatever is true, noble, right, pure… think about these things.”
– Transformed: Romans 12:2 — “That you may discern what is the will of God”
Satan attacks here first. Victory starts with what you meditate on. Psalm 1:2
B. EMOTIONS — The Thermometer
God gave you emotions. Jesus wept John 11:35, was angry Mark 3:5, and rejoiced Luke 10:21.
– Don’t be ruled by them: Proverbs 25:28 — “A man without self-control is like a city broken into.”
– Bring them to God: 1 Peter 5:7 — “Casting all your anxieties on Him”
– Let the Spirit produce them: Galatians 5:22 — “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…”
God wants to heal wounds here. Psalm 147:3 — “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
C. WILL — The Steering Wheel
Deuteronomy 30:19 — “I have set before you life and death… therefore choose life.”
– God won’t force your will. Revelation 3:20 — “Behold, I stand at the door and knock”
– But He strengthens it: Philippians 2:13 — “It is God who works in you, both to will and to work”
– A surrendered will says: Luke 22:42 — “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Practical checks for your SOUL:
What am I feeding my mind? Psalm 119:11
What emotions am I ignoring instead of surrendering? Psalm 62:8
What decision am I delaying that God is asking for? James 4:17
3. SPIRIT — THE HOLY OF HOLIES
This is the deepest part of you. It’s where you meet God.
Deeper truths:
– Born Again: John 3:6 — “That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Your spirit was dead, now alive Ephesians 2:5
– Indwelt: 1 Corinthians 6:17 — “He who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.”
– Led: Romans 8:14 — “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”
– Worships: John 4:24 — “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
The 3 Fruits of a Healthy SPIRIT:
1. FAITH — Hebrews 11:1 — Trust that holds even when you don’t see
2. HOPE — Romans 8:24-25 — Confident expectation in God’s promises
3. LOVE — 1 John 4:19 — The nature of God poured into you Romans 5:5
When your spirit is strong, it subdues the flesh and brings order to the soul. Galatians 5:16-17
HOW THE 3 WORK TOGETHER: THE ORDER OF VICTORY
God’s design is Spirit → Soul → Body, not the other way around.
1. SPIRIT led by Holy Spirit gets filled with Word + Prayer + Worship Colossians 3:16
↓
2. SOUL gets renewed — mind thinks God’s thoughts, emotions get peace, will chooses obedience Ephesians 4:24
↓
3. BODY obeys — your hands serve, your mouth speaks life, your feet walk in purpose Romans 6:13
When we reverse it and let Body → Soul → Spirit lead, we get burnout, anxiety, and sin.
That’s why 1 Thessalonians 5:23 is a prayer for complete sanctification.
WARFARE PRAYER: “SANCTIFY ME COMPLETELY”
Father,
By the blood of Jesus, I present my whole self to You.
Spirit: Breathe on me afresh. Keep me sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Increase my faith, hope, and love. Ephesians 1:17-18
Soul: Renew my mind with Your Word. Heal my emotions. Strengthen my will to choose You daily. Psalm 23:3
Body: I dedicate my body as a living sacrifice. Let my eyes, ears, hands, and feet bring You glory. Romans 12:1
Keep me blameless until Jesus comes. 1 Thessalonians 5:23
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen 🙏
The final charge:
Luke 10:27 — “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind ”*[soul][body]
God wants all of you.
