INTRODUCTION: WHY THIS MATTERS
Everyone understands “father” differently.
For some, “father” means safety, provision, and love.
For others, “father” brings pain, absence, or fear.
But what if we could meet the perfect Father?
The Bible introduces us to God not just as Creator or King, but as Father. This is the most intimate name Jesus taught us to use (Matthew 6:9).
To understand God as Father changes everything:
- Our Identity: We are no longer orphans. We are sons and daughters (Romans 8:15)
- Our Security: We are loved, provided for, and protected (Matthew 6:26)
- Our Healing: The Father heals father wounds and restores broken hearts (Psalm 68:5)
- Our Purpose: We reflect His fatherhood to the world (Matthew 5:48)
This guide will help us see God the way He truly is not through the lens of our earthly experiences, but through Scripture.
SECTION 1: THE CHARACTER, CARE & HEART OF GOD THE FATHER
A. His Character: Who God Is As Father
God is not distant. He is personal, present, and perfect in love.
NIV:
“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” (Psalm 103:8)
“The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.” (Psalm 116:5)
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1)
NKJV:
“The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.” (Psalm 103:8)
“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful.” (Psalm 116:5)
“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1)

“I will praise you, Lord, my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. For great is your love toward me…” (Psalm 89:26)
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9)

Application
God’s fatherhood is defined by grace, not performance. He is kind even when we fail.
Prayer
Father, reveal Your goodness and mercy to me. Heal every wrong picture I have of You. Teach me to trust Your heart.
B. His Care & Provision: How God Meets Our Needs
Your Heavenly Father sees you, knows you, and provides for you.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matthew 6:26)
“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” (Psalm 68:5)
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5)
“Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:6-7)

Like NEPA and generator God wants to be plugged in FIRST. When He is first, provision follows (Matthew 6:33).

Lord, You are my Provider and Protector. I surrender my worries to You. Shape my life like clay in Your hands.
C. His Discipline & Training: How God Grows Us
God disciplines because He loves. His goal is holiness, not punishment.
NIV
“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children… God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in his holiness.” (Hebrews 12:5-11)
“for whom the Lord loves he corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.” (Proverbs 3:11-12)
NKJV
“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord loves He chastens…” (Hebrews 12:5-11, Proverbs 3:11-12)
Application
Discipline is proof of sonship. A father who doesn’t correct doesn’t care.
Prayer
Father, thank You for loving me enough to correct me. Make me more like Jesus.
D. His Heart for the Lost: How God Welcomes Us Back
Reference: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)
NIV
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20)
Application
God runs to us. No matter how far we’ve gone, the Father’s arms are open.

Lord, help me to run to You. Give me Your heart for those who are far from You
SECTION 2: GOD AS FATHER IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
The Old Testament lays the foundation. God reveals Himself as Father to Israel and to the vulnerable.
NIV Verses
“Is not he your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?” (Deuteronomy 32:6)
“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him” (Psalm 103:13)
“For to us a child is born… And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
“But now, Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, you are the potter” (Isaiah 64:8)
“You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us or Israel acknowledge us; you, Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.” (Isaiah 63:16)
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

Key Truth: Even when Israel rebelled, God remained a faithful Father (Isaiah 63:16)

Everlasting Father, I anchor on Your faithfulness. Potter, mold me. Be a Father to the fatherless.
SECTION 3: GOD AS FATHER REVEALED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT THROUGH JESUS
Jesus is the full picture of the Father. To know Jesus is to know the Father (John 14:9).
A. Jesus Reveals the Father
NIV
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” (Colossians 1:15)
“Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.’” (John 14:9)
“The Father and I are one.” (John 10:30)
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us… from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
B. Jesus Gives Us Access to the Father
NIV
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6)
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.” (1 Peter 3:18)
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
C. We Become Children of God
NIV
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12)
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” (Romans 8:15)
“And, ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’” (2 Corinthians 6:18)
“There is one body and one Spirit… one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:4-6)
“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17)
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name…” (John 14:26)
Application
Salvation is adoption. The Holy Spirit makes us cry “Abba” — Daddy.
Prayer
Abba Father, I receive the Spirit of adoption. Thank you for the cross. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit.
SECTION 4: IMPLICATIONS & HEALING FOR TODAY
Many of us struggle with “God as Father” because of earthly fathers who abandoned, abused, or failed us.
But God is different.
NIV
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” (1 John 4:10)
Healing Truths:
- God is Father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5)
- God never leaves or abandons (Hebrews 13:5)
- God knows you intimately (Luke 12:6-7)
- God loves you sacrificially (John 3:16, Romans 5:8)
Prayer for Healing
Father, heal me from father wounds. I release pain and unforgiveness. Show me your perfect fatherhood. Help me represent You to others.
CONCLUSION: WALKING AS SONS AND DAUGHTERS
The Invitation
God is not asking you to perform to earn His love. He’s asking you to receive it.
Through Jesus, the door to the Father is open. Through the Spirit, you can call Him “Abba.”
Your Identity: You are chosen, loved, provided for, disciplined, and destined.
Your Response: Stop running. Start walking with Him.
DAILY DECLARATION
“My Father in heaven loves me, provides for me, protects me, and will never leave me. I am His child. Abba, I trust You.” (Matthew 6:9, Romans 8:15)
Final Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting me. From today, I choose to live as Your son/daughter. Heal my heart, lead me by Your Spirit, and use my life to show the world what a good Father You are. In Jesus name, Amen.
