1. THE PRIESTHOOD CLOCK STARTS EVERYTHING
Luke opens with Zacharias. That’s not random. GOD times everything by the temple.
Luke 1:5 “...Zacharias, of the division of Abijah”. 1 Chronicles 24:10 tells us Abijah was the 8th course. The priestly year began in Nisan, the month of Passover. Each course lasted for one week. So if you count forward, the course of Abijah lands around Sivan, the 3rd month, which is when Shavuot/Pentecost happens. Luke 1:23 says “when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived.” So John is conceived around late Sivan. Then Gabriel tells Mary in Luke 1:36 “this is the sixth month for her who was called barren.”
That’s six months after Elizabeth conceived. Six months after Sivan is Kislev. That’s when the “Light of the world” was conceived. Kislev is also Hanukkah, the Feast of Dedication. Fitting that the Light would be conceived during a feast of lights.Nine months from Kislev brings us to Tishri. The 7th month. The month of the Fall Feasts. And right in the middle of Tishri is the 15th day.
Leviticus 23:34 “On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the LORD.”That’s Sukkot. That’s when shepherds were still in the fields in Judea. That’s when Jerusalem was packed with pilgrims. That’s when “there was no room in the inn” [Luke 2:7] because everyone was in booths.
2. THE WORD “DWELT” IS THE BIGGEST CLUE
John could have used any word. But the Holy Spirit led him to this one.John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.” That Greek word eskenosen only means one thing: He pitched a tent. He lived in a booth. Why would John use tabernacle language if Jesus was born in December? December has no connection to tabernacles.
But Tishri 15 is the feast where Israel lived in sukkot to remember Leviticus 23:42 “that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt.”And what did the angels announce? Luke 2:10-11 “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is CHRIST the LORD.”Joy. Sukkot is called Zman Simchateinu — the Season of Our Joy.
And “Emmanuel” means Matthew 1:23 “GOD with us.” The entire message of Sukkot is GOD dwelling with man.
3. JESUS FULFILLED SUKKOT WHILE HE WAS ALIVE
He didn’t just get born on it. He taught on it.On the “last day of the feast, the great day” of Sukkot, John 7:37-38 “JESUS stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.’”
That was the Water Pouring Ceremony. Priests would pour water to remember GOD giving water in the wilderness. Jesus said I am the living water.
The very next day, John 8:12 “Again JESUS spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world.’”That was right after the lighting of the four giant menorahs in the temple courts during Sukkot. The whole city was lit up. And Jesus said I am the light.He was born at the feast, and He fulfilled the feast.
4. THE 8TH DAY FITS TOO
Luke 2:21 “And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called JESUS.”
The 8th day after Sukkot is Shemini Atzeret. It’s a day of solemn assembly. A day of dedication.
And Luke 2:22-24 says Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple for dedication and purification. The timing fits perfectly. A child born on day 1 of Sukkot is dedicated on the 8th day.
5. WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER VIEW?
Some put Zacharias in the second course of Abijah in Kislev. That would push Jesus’ birth to around September, or even to spring. It’s possible. The Bible doesn’t give us the year. Deuteronomy 29:29 “The secret things belong to the LORD our GOD.”
But the Sivan course fits the “sixth month” language of Luke 1:36 more naturally, and it gives us the beautiful picture of conception at Hanukkah and birth at Tabernacles. Light conceived, Light born in the feast of dwelling.Either way, what we can say with certainty is this: December 25 has zero Biblical support. Shepherds weren’t in fields. Census travel didn’t happen in winter.
And the apostles never told us to celebrate His birthday. They told us to proclaim His death until He comes [1 Cor 11:26].
6. WHY THIS MATTERS
Because GOD is a GOD of patterns. Colossians 2:17 “These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to CHRIST.”Was he born at Passover time? No, but He died at Passover as the Lamb. He was born near Tabernacles?
Very likely, because He came to dwell. Will he return at the 4Trumpets? 1 Thessalonians 4:16 “with the sound of the trumpet of GOD.” Will he judge at Atonement and dwell with us at Tabernacles? Revelation 21:3 “Behold, the dwelling place of GOD is with man.”
The feasts are GOD’s calendar of redemption. And Jesus hit every appointment.
FINAL WORD
Don’t get distracted by dates. Get captured by the meaning.John 1:16 “For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”
Whether He was born in a manger or in a sukkah, the point is He left glory to tabernacle with us.
And He’s coming back so we can tabernacle with Him forever.Revelation 22:20 “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, LORD JESUS!”

THE FOUNDATION: PRIESTLY COURSE OF ABIJAH
1 Chronicles 24:7-10, 19 “The eighth lot fell to Abijah... These had their appointed order of service...” Luke 1:5 “In the days of Herod... there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah”
The 24 priestly courses began in Nisan. Each served 1 week. All 24 served together at Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.
1. Zacharias serves Time: Sivan, around mid-June Scripture: Luke 1:8-9, 23 He was on the 8th course "Abijah". After his week of service, he went home.
2. John is conceived Time: Late Sivan, around late June Scripture: Luke 1:24 “After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived” John is 6 months older than JESUS [Luke 1:36]
3. Gabriel visits Mary Time: Kislev, around late November / early December Scripture: Luke 1:26-27, 36 “In the sixth month... this is the sixth month for her who was called barren” "Sixth month" = 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy
4. JESUS is conceived Time: Kislev 25, during Hanukkah season Scripture: Luke 1:31 The “Light of the world” is conceived during the Feast of Lights.
5. Mary visits Elizabeth Time: Kislev to Tevet, December to January Scripture: Luke 1:39-44 John leaps in the womb at 6 months of gestation.
6. John the Baptist is born Time: Nisan, around late March / early April Scripture: Luke 1:57-58 9 months after Sivan. Passover season. The “Lamb of GOD” forerunner is born.
7. JESUS is born Time: TISHRI 15 Scripture: Luke 2:7-8 “she gave birth... and there were shepherds” This is FEAST OF TABERNACLES / SUKKOT [Leviticus 23:34]. Shepherds were still in the fields. Jerusalem was full of pilgrims.
8. Circumcision + Dedication Time: TISHRI 22-23, one week later Scripture: Luke 2:21-22 8th Day = Shemini Atzeret. The day of solemn assembly and dedication.
9. JESUS begins His ministry Time: TISHRI, about 30 years later Scripture: Luke 3:23 “He was about 30 years of age” He began ministry at the same season He was born.
10. JESUS is crucified Time: NISAN 14, in the Spring Scripture: John 19:14 Passover. About 3.5 years later. He fulfills the Spring Feasts as the Lamb.

APPLICATION FOR TEACHING
Main Point: The Bible doesn’t give us a birthday to celebrate. It gives us a Savior to worship. Romans 14:5-6 “One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.”
But we should never call tradition “Bible”. Mark 7:7-8 “in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”
The real celebration: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given” [Isaiah 9:6]. And He came to the tabernacle with us.
PRAYER
“FATHER, thank You for sending Your Son to dwell among us.
Open our eyes to see how every feast, every detail, points to YAHUSHA.
Help us worship You in Spirit and Truth, not tradition.
